Horn-eyed ghost crab

Crustacea | Ocypodidae
Ocypode ceratophthalmus

Characteristics

The horn-eyed ghost crab is yellow-brown, making them hard to find when moving on the sand. They live on sandy beaches with the Stimpson's ghost crab. Adults are slightly larger than the Stimpson's ghost crab and have a thin long protrusion on the top of their eyes. The horn-eyed ghost crab is carnivorous. Leftovers, including empty shells of other crabs and small fish remains, are often seen outside the burrow openings where pieces of sediment are also scattered in a radial pattern.

Distribution

The horn-eyed ghost crab can be seen on sandy beaches at Gaomei Wetlands, where the crab digs and lives in burrows.
